"[Lot of 2] Verus Chersonesi Tauricae seu Crimea Conspectus... [and] Theatrum Belli Ao: MDCCXXXVII a Milite Augustae Russorum Imperatricis Adversus Turcas Tattarosque...", Ottens, Reiner and Joshua

This lot includes two maps and a page of text chronicling the Russo-Turkish War of 1735-39. They are based on the maps of Burkhard Christoph Graf von Munnich and Peter Graf von Lacy, a German and an Irishman who both served as military leaders in the Imperial Russian Army. Their maps were re-engraved by several publishers, including the Ottens, Covens & Mortier, and Antoine du Chaffat. The first map depicts the theater of war in Crimea and the Sea of Azov in 1737. The route of the Russian Army in its expedition against the Tartars is depicted, along with fortifications and encampments. The second map broadens the scope to show the theater of war in Ukraine more generally. It provides excellent detail of the fortifications including the Ukrainian line - a system of defenses from the Dnipro to the Donetz River. Both maps are printed on two sheets, joined as issued, with alternate titles running above the neatline at top. They are accompanied by a page of explanatory text in four languages: Latin, French, Dutch, and German.

Both maps feature contemporary color. The margins have been trimmed to the neatline at left, right, and bottom. All three sheets are slightly toned with some light spots. The Crimea map has some small chips along the edges. There is a short worm track across the centerfold of the text sheet.
