This is the sixth volume of the short-lived Literary Magazine (1803-07) published in Philadelphia by J. Conrad & Co. It contains six monthly issues (July - December 1806), including a letter from Clark to his brother in the December issue (pp. 442-45). The letter was dated St. Louis, 23d Sept 1806 and provided “the first substantive account of the Lewis and Clark expedition to reach the American public.” The letter was initially published in the Frankfort, Kentucky Palladium because St. Louis had no newspaper at the time. This is one of the earliest reprintings of the letter. The September issue also has “An Account of the Country and Productions Near the Red River…” that provides an early description of San Antonio, Texas, here called St. Antoine, by Dr. John Sibley of Nachitoches (pp. 173-74). 480 pages. Hardbound in original full leather with gilt stamped spine.
