"The discovery of gold in California ... forms the commencement of a most important era in the commercial history of the world; or, to use even a wider term, in its general history." So begins the introduction of Ernest Seyd's fascinating book published by Trubner & Co. in the aftermath of the California Gold Rush. The text covers California's history, commerce, agriculture, and, of course, gold-mining. It is intended to point emigrants, merchants, and capitalists alike toward opportunity in the Golden State. The book includes two folding maps: California (12.1 x 14.7") and an untitled world map showing routes to California (18.6 x 12.3"). The state map features nice topographical detail and delineates Freemont's route 1844. There is an inset at top right that zooms out to depict the American West. Both overland and sea routes are highlighted on the world map, with the durations of the routes noted at bottom. In addition to the maps, the book includes 22 illustrations, some in color. Among the notable plates are various views of San Francisco, including an attractive view of the entire city; the first views of Yosemite Valley (here called Yo-Hamite Valley) published in a book; and images of the Mother and Father of the Forest. 168 pages. Hardbound in black pebbled cloth with gilt titles on cover and spine. A gilt engraving of a $50 gold coin appears on the front cover as well.

The California map is lightly toned with a few minor spots and some faint offsetting from an opposing page of text. There are several light damp stains on the route map. Text is very good with light scattered foxing and occasional damp stains, primarily in the latter half of the book. The volume is bowed. Covers have moderate wear, and there is significant damp staining to the back cover.
