These two thematic charts were based upon the work of Matthew Fontaine Maury and issued in Andriveau-Goujon's Atlas Universel. The first chart shows the flow of ocean currents throughout the world, while the second chart shows the trade winds. Maury developed a set of of ocean and wind charts based upon old ships' logbooks and supplemented them with new data from captains as they voyaged across the seas. Maury published his first work using this information in 1847 entitled Wind and Current Chart of the North Atlantic, and later issued The Physical Geography of the Sea in 1856. Maury's charts are reported to have reduced the average voyage between east and west coast ports by nearly two months.
