This volume includes the 12 monthly issues of The Virginias, A Mining, Industrial and Scientific Journal for the year 1881. Published by the former Confederate cartographer Jed Hotchkiss, the journal features local news, research, advertisements and illustrations throughout the 192 pages. Of particular interest are the two maps included in the volume: Geological Map of Parts of Lee, Wise, Scott, and Washington Counties (12.5 x 7") and the larger Map Showing Lines and Connections of the Shenandoah Valley and Norfolk & Western Railways (25.6 x 19.2") that covers the eastern United States and depicts the railroad network. Hardbound in quarter leather and tips over marbled boards.
The large folding map of the eastern United States has light toning and a short binding tear at left, while the geological map of southwestern Virginia has some light toning and offsetting. Text is good to very good with light toning and several pages have small sections that have been clipped out. Covers are moderately worn and the spine has nearly perished. Maps (B+), Text/Binding (B).
