"William Adams Reystogt na Oost-Indien; Avontuurlyle door de Straat Magellaan, in't Keyzerryle van Iapan Voleyndigd", Aa, Pieter van der

This uncommon map celebrates the landing of Englishman William Adams, the pilot of the first Dutch trading ship to arrive in Japan. Adams served under the shogun and held many important positions related to both trade and ship building. He died in Hirado in 1620, having never returned to Europe. The map's decorative title cartouche shows Adams during a meeting with the shogun, who sits on a towering throne. Cartographically, the map follows the Sanson model with a partial coastline of Terra de Iesso and Korea in insular form. Eddo is located in the interior, equidistant from the coasts of the Pacific and the Sea of Japan as it is shown on Jansson's map of 1658. First state with "Pag. 1" above the neatline at top right.
