This reference was written by four experts in American history and cartography. The book is a follow-up to The Discovery of North America, presenting a well documented and meticulous survey of European expansion in the New World, featuring eye-witness accounts and narratives of the explorers and settlers. Each chapter contains a historical survey of the opening up of new land and the main exploration routes. 272 pp, 400 illustrations, 47 in full color. Hardbound in original green cloth with gilt title on spine. Condition: Text block is a little loose, with faint sunning across the top of the pages and minor scattered foxing along the edges. There is a large damp stain most evident on the spine and back cover. (B+)
B. America Explored - A Cartographical History of the Exploration of North America, by Adrian Johnson, (10.3 x 13.9"). This richly illustrated history covers the discovery and exploration of North America from the voyages of the Vikings to the expeditions to the West. Folio, 254 pp. with more than 350 illustrations, both maps and engravings, several in color. Hardbound in simulated brown leather with gilt title on front cover and spine, with dust jacket. Condition: Text is very good with some creased corners and toned end papers. Spine is cracked with some small chips. The dust jacket has multiple tears. (B)
