The Western Railroad was chartered in 1833 to connect to the Hudson & Berkshire Railroad at the New York state line. Construction commenced in 1837 with this eastern section opening in 1839 (the western section would open in 1841). The Western Railroad is now the Boston & Albany Railroad.
