This large-scale Depot de la Marine coastal chart depicts the coast of the Brazilian state of Sao Paolo. It centers on Santos and extends from Iguape to Sao Sebastiao. There is nice topographical detail of the inland mountain ranges and plenty of navigational information, including soundings, anchorages, bottom types, and lights. The chart is based on surveys conducted by Ernest Mouchez aboard the Le Motte-Piquet in 1864-65. Mouchez was an innovator in the field of surveying and improved the way longitude is determined through his use of the theodolite and meridian telescope. He made invaluable contributions to the mapping of the coasts of Brazil, Argentina, and Uruguay. Engraved by J. Millian, tinted by Naudin, drafted by Nyon, and with lettering by J. Burty. Prix Deux Francs is noted below the neatline at right.
