This map presents the hemisphere on an unusual projection developed by John Hardy of Eton College. The map is split into two football-shaped halves. There are numbers identifying various locations, but the corresponding key is not included. Still, there are several place names. Both New Guinea and Tasmania are attached to Australia. The map was engraved and drawn by Thomas Bowen and published by F. Newbery on April 1st, 1776. The lot includes an additional engraving, American Stoves on the Improved Construction, from a 1781 volume of Gentleman's Magazine.
