A. [2 Volumes - Facsimile] Travels in North America in the Years 1780, 1781 and 1782 by the Marquis de Chastellux - A Revised Translation with Introduction and Notes, by Howard C. Rice, Jr., published 1963, black & white (6.6 x 9.8"). This updated translation of Chastellux's epochal journals features an introduction, historical notes, and a number of additional black & white illustrations, including photographs showing surviving buildings mentioned in the book. Chastellux's work provides a first-hand perspective of the American Revolution and is one of the great contemporary Revolutionary War accounts. The Marquis de Chastellux was one of the forty members of the French Academy and a Major General in the French army in the late 1700's. He served under the Count de Rochambeau and joined forces with General Washington in the famous march on Yorktown that led to Cornwallis' surrender. These volumes are compiled from the journals of Chastellux's travels in America during this pivotal time in American history. They contain a wealth of information on both military and civilian life in the regions he visited, and his personal impressions of the character and philosophy of many of the Revolution's most important figures such as General Washington, Thomas Jefferson, Samuel Adams, Thomas Paine and General La Fayette. He also gives detailed accounts about his personal involvement with several landmark battles. Reproductions of Chastellux's maps appear as the endpapers. Hardbound in green cloth with an illustrated cardboard slipcase. 688 pp. Condition: Contents tight and covers are very good with faint soiling and minor sunning along the spines. The slipcase has some small tears, light sunning and soiling, and some shelf wear. (B+)

B. Lewis & Clark - Voyage of Discovery, by Stephen E. Ambrose, published 1998, printed color (11.1 x 9.4"). This handsomely produced book presents renowned historian Stephen E. Ambrose's account of the Lewis and Clark expedition. Heavily illustrated with maps, drawings, and contemporary photographs by Sam Abell of the landscapes that Lewis and Clark discovered, it is a true feast for the eyes. Hardbound in black cloth with silver titles on front cover and spine. Includes an illustrated dust jacket. 255 pp. Condition: Contents and covers like new. The dust jacket has a couple short tears along the spine and minor shelf wear. (A)
