Elegant map of the Iberian peninsula depicting the region in ancient times. The map was based on modern information from Clusius' six-sheet map of 1571 with ancient knowledge from Strabo, Appianus, Bongarius, Livius, Valerius Maximus and Suetonius. The region of Gibraltar and Cadiz are included in an inset. The map is beautifully engraved with a stippled sea, strapwork cartouches and calligraphy. This is the second state with Latin text on verso, published in 1618 in Petrus Bertius' edition of Theatri Geographiae Veteris, which contained a number of Ortelius' maps of the ancient world. Theatri Geographiae Veteris was printed in Leyden by Isaac Elzevir and published in Amsterdam by Jodocus Hondius.
