"Map of Public Surveys in California to Accompany Report of Surveyor Genl.", General Land Office
Period: 1855 (dated)
Color: Hand Color
31.1 x 36.2 inches
79 x 91.9 cm
This large and remarkably detailed map delineates the progress of public surveys throughout the state on the scale of 18 miles per inch. About one-third of the state, in the north and east, remains unsurveyed. Signed in the plate by John C. Hays, U.S. Surveyor General of California.
Issued folding and now backed in thin, archival tissue to repair a few tiny fold separations, minor holes at fold intersections, and a 4" tear at left. There is light toning along the folds, minor scattered foxing, and light soiling. Remargined at left to accommodate framing.
