"Cuba Insula [on sheet with] Hispaniola Insula [and] Ins. Iamaica [and] Ins. S. Ioannis [and] I.S. Margareta", Mercator/Jansson

Subject: Greater Antilles

Period: 1651 (published)

Publication: Atlas Minor

Color: Hand Color

7.1 x 5.6 inches
18 x 14.2 cm

This charming small sheet includes maps of several Caribbean islands. The map of Cuba is positioned above Hispaniola with smaller insets of Havana, Jamaica, Puerto Rico and Margarita Island. This is the second plate that Jansson used in his Atlas Minor, due to damage in the first plate that caused several corners to break off. The plate was faithfully re-engraved, however the longitude numerals below the map of Hispaniola differ in the two plates. This second plate only appeared in the German editions of 1648 and 1651, and is thus very rare. German text on verso.

References: Van der Krogt (Vol. III) #9610:352B.1.

Nice impression and color on watermarked paper with light show-through of text on verso and foxing confined to the blank margins.
