A. The Columbia Historical Portrait of New York - An Essay in Graphic History in Honor of the Tricentennial of New York City and the Bicentennial of Columbia University, by John A. Kouwenhoven, published 1953, printed color (9.3 x 10.8"). This is the first edition of this terrific reference that collects hundreds of photographs and illustrations to create a portrait of New York City for its 300th anniversary. It was initially published as part of Columbia University's 200th anniversary and is dedicated to the school's faculty and students. Illustrations are in black and white and color. Hardbound in two-tone blue cloth with silver titles and a Columbia University medallion on the front cover. 550 pp. Condition: Contents very good with light toning along the edges of the pages. Front hinge is starting. There is some color offsetting on the back endpapers. Covers have moderate soiling and wear. Spine is sunned. (B)

B. Penet's Square - An Episode in the Early History of Northern New York, by Thomas F. Powell, published 1976, black & white (6.2 x 9.3"). This short history tells the intriguing tale of Pierre Penet, "master of intrigue, gun-runner, aide to George Washington, Indian trader, 'ship-owner and sailing master,'" and Penet's Square, the 100-mile tract of land given to him by the Oneida Indians. The book details dispute over Penet's Square, located in the Thousand Islands Region of the St. Lawrence River. Published for the bicentennial celebration of Northern New York, this is a compelling read on this historical episode that was so important to the development of the region. Hardbound in gray cloth with an illustrated dust jacket. 203 pp. Condition: Contents and covers tight. The dust jacket is worn with some edge tears and small chips. (A)
