This fascinating folio volume is part of Van der Aa's compilation of early Spanish American discovery, based on Herrera. The text describes the explorations and discoveries of various explorers, including Christopher Columbus, Amerigo Vespucci, Juan Ponce de Leon, Sebastián de Ocampo, Francisco Hernández de Córdoba, Juan de Grijalva, and Pedro Arias Dávila, among others. Eight maps accompany the text to depict the areas explored. Interspersed within the text are also 59 half-page engravings depicting scenes throughout the Americas, derived from De Bry. The maps include:

This is the first of two volumes of the second part of Van der Aa's Naaukeurige Versameling. Handsomely rebound in period style in quarter-calf with tips over marbled paper covered boards, with raised bands and leather title labels on spine.

Condition:

The maps are nearly all in near fine condition, with crisp, dark impressions. See description above for additional condition details on each map. The text and engravings are very good with occasional toning and minor foxing (A/B+). The new binding is near fine with bumped corners and one small abrasion on the front cover at bottom (A).
