A. The Maps of the California Gold Region 1848-1857 - A Biblio-Cartography of an Important Decade, by Carl I. Wheat, black & white (9.2 x 12.3"). This important carto-bibliography covers maps produced between 1848 and 1857, one of the most important decades in the American history. It is the definitive reference on California Gold Rush maps and a comprehensive study of early California cartography. This edition is the Martino reprint of the rare 1942 Grabhorn Press Edition. It contains C.D. Gibbs Map of the Southern Mines, 1852, that was not included in the original edition. It includes a new introduction by Gold Rush bibliographer Gary Kurutz and an addendum by map collector Warren Heckrotte. Hardbound in beige buckram, 153 pages, illustrated. This reprint edition limited to 350 copies. Condition: Near fine with a small amount of shelf wear. (A)

B. The Mapping of California as an Island - An Illustrated Checklist, by Glen McLaughlin and Nancy H. Mayo, printed color (8.5 x 11.1"). Glen McLaughlin's contribution to the carto-bibliography of maps featuring the mythical island of California has become the definitive reference on the subject. It lists 249 maps (other than world maps), with an additional six in celestial charts, seventeen on title pages, and one on a silver medal. It is indexed by title and by name, including cartographers, engravers, and publishers. Most of the entries are accompanied by illustrations. Bound in soft pictorial covers. Condition: Contents near fine. There is light wear to the covers. (B+)
