"[2 Volumes] Oeuvres de Fenimore Cooper...Les Pionniers [and]...La Prairie",

This is a French translation of the fourth and fifth volumes from James Fenimore Cooper's "Leatherstocking Tales." This fictional five-volume series' main character is Natty Bumppo, a child of European-American descent who was raised by the Delaware Indians. In his adulthood he became a fearless warrior with his Indian foster brother, Chingachgook, by his side. The second and most famous volume from this series is "The Last of the Mohicans."

Each of these stories contains a map at the back of the volume and two single-page plates. The map in Les Pionniers (430 pages), "Carte Dressee pour la Lecture des Pionniers" (5.2 x 6.5"), depicts Otsego Lake in New York state. Cooperstown is shown to the south of the lake at the beginning of the Susquehanna River. Topography is crisply engraved throughout. La Prairie (437 pages) features "Carte Dressee pour la Lecture de la Prairie" (6.5 x 5.3") and depicts the United States from the Mississippi River to the Rocky Mountains. Mexico is in control of the southwest and the large Missouri Territory is filled with the names and locations of Indian tribes. Both maps were produced by Aristide Michel Perrot.

Octavo, hardbound in tan quarter leather over marbled paper boards with gilt titles and raised bands on spine.

The maps are near fine with a few spots of foxing mostly in the blank margins. Text is very good with occasional foxing. Covers are lightly worn and edges bumped with some abrasions to the leather spine along the joint.
