"[Lot of 4] Africa [and] Egypt [and] West Africa [and] Colony of the Cape of Good Hope", Arrowsmith & Lewis
Period: 1804 (circa)
Publication: A New and Elegant General Atlas...
Color: Black & White
Shortly after the turn of the century, Samuel Lewis joined with Aaron Arrowsmith (an English map publisher) to produce A New and Elegant General Atlas. The title page states the maps are "intended to accompany the new improved edition of Morse's Geography…" Several editions were published from 1804-1819. This lot includes four copper engraved maps which demonstrate the evolving knowledge of the continent's geography with detail limited to the coastline. The maps include:
A. Africa, (9.8 x 7.9").
B. Egypt, (7.9 x 9.8").
C. West Africa, (8.0 x 9.8").
D. Colony of the Cape of Good Hope, (9.8 x 7.9").
References: Phillips (A) #702.
Very good with light printer's ink residue, a couple of spots of foxing, and a few faint extraneous creases.
