This scarce, small, double-hemisphere map depicts California as an island. Australia includes the western and northern coasts and the discoveries of Van Diemen. There are numerous Pacific islands including a partial coastline of New Zealand. Includes an inset map of the north pole. The map is decorated by allegorical depictions of the four elements - fire, earth, air and water - encased in rococo cartouches. Engraved by Benjamin Cole for the New Universal Magazine. This example is not in Jolly. No dealer listings or auction results in the last 35 years.
Issued folding on watermarked paper and now pressed and backed with tissue to reinforce and repair several fold separations and adjacent short tears. There is light soiling and a thin strip along a fold south of Africa that has been replaced with old paper, with a minute amount of image replaced in facsimile.
