A. The New World - The First Pictures of America..., by Stefan Lorant, published 1946, printed color (9.4 x 12.3"). This is a fascinating history of the first French and English settlements on eastern North American seaboards from eyewitness accounts including those of John White and Le Moyne. Heavily illustrated in b/w and color with the water colors of John White (1585), de Bry's engravings of the Virginia and Florida settlements, and excerpts from Thomas Hariot's New Found Land of Virginia (1588). 292 pp., index, bibliography. First edition, Duell, Sloan & Pearce, NY. Hardbound in beige linen with gilt map on front cover. Includes a dust jacket protected by mylar. Condition: Contents very good with some minor toning and foxing on the outer edges of the sheets. Covers and dust jacket are lightly soiled. (B+)

B. How They Saw the New World, by Ernst and Johanna Lehner, published 1966, black & white (8.8 x 11.3"). This interesting reference is illustrated with over 200 reproduced engravings of the New World as it appeared to the first explorers to land there. More than 40 of the rarest maps of the New World are reproduced in this fascinating book, including the Vinland Map and the Admiral Map. 160 pp., hardbound in brown cloth with gilt title on spine and a pictorial dustjacket protected by mylar. Condition: Contents fine with just a hint of toning on the outer edges of the sheets. Dust jacket has some minor wear. (A)
