This fascinating and complete puzzle set contains eight maps - the world in hemispheres, Asia, Africa, Oceania, South America, Europe, France and Switzerland. The maps measure 14.3 x 10.1” when assembled and are separated by pressed paper dividers, all of which have the original blue ribbon pulls to facilitate removing the puzzles from the box. Each puzzle piece is mounted on thin wood with original maroon paper on verso and gold paper edging. The maps neatly fit into the original paper board box which features a beautifully embossed and highly decorative cover with gold leaf.
Circa date of 1845 is based upon Mexico still being in control of California and the Southwest on the world map.
This set has survived well given its intended purpose. The puzzles are in good to very good condition with light to moderate toning and minor soiling. The map of France is missing one small piece. The box shows light wear with two sides of the top cover having become unglued.
