This handsome facsimile of Sebastian Munster's pioneering Cosmographia is from the Mirror of the World - A Series of Early Books on the History of Urbanization First Series - Volume V, published by Theatrum Orbis Terrarum Ltd. Munster probably had more influence in spreading geographical knowledge throughout Europe in the mid-sixteenth century than any of his contemporaries. His Cosmographia contained not only the latest maps and city views, but also included an encyclopedic amount of detail about the known-- and unknown-- world and its history. The book is heavily illustrated with a plethora of striking maps, plans, and woodcuts. Dr. Ruthardt Oehme wrote the in-depth introduction, which appears in both English and German. Hardbound in brown faux leather with gilt decorations on front cover and title on spine.
Contents fine with minor wear to the covers and bumped edges. The hinges are starting.
