Coenraad Jacob Temminck was an important Dutch ornithologist and zoologist and the first director of the National Natural History Museum at Leiden. Together with Meiffren Laugier, he published the Nouveau Recueil de Planches coloriées d'Oiseaux (New Collection of Color-Plates of Birds) between 1820 and 1839 as a supplement to Buffon's monumental Histoire Naturelle des Oiseaux (Natural History of Birds). These engravings are by Jean Gabriel Pretre, a Swiss artist who illustrated a number of important ornithological books, and Nicolas Huet, a Frenchman known for illustrating natural history.
