This small map of the Black Hills region was included in the July 2nd, 1875 issue of the New-York Tribune. It is accompanied by a long article on the discovery of gold entitled "The Black Hills - Gold in Custer's Gulch." The unidentified correspondent writing the article was Samuel Barrows, who had accompanied Custer on two previous expeditions. Barrows provides details on the initial exploration around Harney's Peak (Mt. Rushmore) where gold was discovered and panned by miners and soldiers alike. The article ends with the prescient: "The Indians so far have not been seen…they no doubt look upon [the military presence] as another military expedition to capture and take out of the Hills the miners found here. What their course will be when they discover their mistake, no one can tell." Complete, 8-page issue. On full sheets of text measuring 18.3 x 23.8".
