This very uncommon small map of the Americas features the Island of California prominently, with an indented northern coast labeled as Nova Albion. It was published in M. Benjamin Hederichs' Anleitung zu den Furnehmsten Historischen Wissenschaften.... The Fretum Anian connects to a faintly engraved river, alluding to a Northwest Passage and the northwest coastline is named Terra Iedso al: Esonis. A note curiously credits Vasco de Gama with discovering this coastline. The British colonies are confined to the eastern seaboard with only Pennsylvania and Virginia named. Santa Fe appears in Nova Mexico. The title cartouche shows a missionary ministering to natives and incorporates decorative elements from one of Homann's maps of America.
