This large, attractive globe gore of the Atlantic Ocean includes considerable coastline detail along the northeastern seaboard of North America, the West Indies and the northern coast of South America. The map shows both the northern and southern sailing routes to Europe, a fishing vessel off the coast of New England, two rowboats, and a group of manatees.
Vincenzo Coronelli was a Franciscan priest and renowned mathematician and cartographer. He was appointed official Cosmographer to the Venetian Republic in 1685 and founded the world's earliest geographic society, L'Accademia Cosmografica degli Argonauti.
