This sheet contains two maps focusing on the Caucasian theater of the Russo-Turkish War (1877-78), which was ongoing at the time The Illustrated London New published these maps. A fight between the Ottoman Empire and an alliance of Eastern Orthodox states led by Russia, the war was the result of stirring Balkan nationalism and Russia's desire to strengthen its reputation after the Crimean War. The map at the top of the page shows parts of Turkey and present-day Georgia and Armenia. The map below zooms in on the Kars province of Turkey, which was ceded to Russia at the conclusion of the war. Engraved by Ernst Georg Ravenstein. There is an interesting article on verso based on Colonel James Baker's book Turkey in Europe.
A nice impression with some show-through of text on verso.
