"Mappe-Monde Divisee en Deux Hemispheres",
Period: 1842 (dated)
Color: Hand Color
22.5 x 16.5 inches
57.2 x 41.9 cm
This fascinating manuscript sheet represents the education and memories of a French student. The sheet centers on a double-hemisphere world map, with the western hemisphere shown on the right. There are a remarkable number of place names noted for a map of this size. Surrounding the map are a sheet of music, a botanical drawing, a sketch of an old farmhouse, a French proverb, a business receipt, the symbol of the student's boarding school, and an English poem. Finely drawn in pen and ink with outline color on the map and watercolor on the botanical. Signed and dated at lower left.
There is light soiling, a couple of minute pinholes, small abrasions scattered throughout, and minor creasing. There is a tiny chip at bottom of sheet with a short tear that just touches neatline and has been closed on verso with archival tape.
