This fine chart shows the track of Captain Nordenskjold's whaler, the SS Vega, that sailed to Lena on Russia's Arctic coast after rounding the Taymyr Peninsula, with a rendering of the ship included in the top left corner. Nils Adolf Erik Nordenskjold (1832-1901) was an Arctic explorer, historian, and geologist who commanded the first successful transit of a Northeast Passage in 1878-1879. He left Sweden in June of 1878, passed through the Yugosky Strait, and rounded Cape Chelyuskin in August. After wintering 120 miles from the East Cape, he passed through the Bering Strait and into the Pacific Ocean in the summer of 1879. Augustus Petermann included this chart is his famous Geographische Mittheilungen, published by Justus Perthes in 1879.
