This frontispiece comes from Johnson's American Atlas and shows Native Americans on a high vantage point looking down at the European settlers' rapid westward expansion.  In the background are many symbols of development including a railroad, a steamship, a developing town and a farm.  Engraved by Carl Emil Doepler.
