This is the complete set of The Modern Gazetteer, by Alexander Aitchison. This geographical dictionary lists thousands of place names alphabetically with explanations of each, including towns, rivers, provinces, etc. The volumes also feature 17 folding maps. The maps include a double-hemisphere world map (frontispiece), Africa, South America, North America, Asia, Cisalpine Republic and Maritime Austria, England & Wales, Europe, France, Germany, Hindoostan, Ireland, Italy, Poland Lithuania & Prussia, Russia, Scotland, and Spain & Portugal. Printed for R. Morison & Son, Booksellers, Perth. 8vo, 812 pp. and 712 pp. Original bindings in full tree calf with gilt bands and title on red morocco label on spine.
Maps are in original color and range in condition from near fine to very good, with occasional light toning, tiny spots, short fold separations, or short binding tears. Light toning and occasional foxing in text. Binding is sound, but hinges are starting. Covers and spine show wear and corners are bumped.
