This lovely little geography book was written in French by P. Gibrat and published by Joseph Robert in Toulouse. It is the sixth edition, and has been revised to include an analysis of the terrestrial globe, with the addition of a new, detailed world map presented as a frontispiece. This map features a very large Sea of the West and the apocryphal Northwest Passage the other world map and the map of the Americas feature the island of California. In the preface, the author writes that his many revisions over the last 20 years have enabled him to perfect his work. This book was written for students and is meant to be a concise lesson on geography. Included are 19 folding maps: 2 of world, Europe, France, Great Britain, Low Countries, Scandinavia, Poland, Germany, Rhein, Switzerland, Spain, Italy, 2 of Turkey, Greece, Asia, Africa, and the Western Hemisphere. 16mo. Full brown calf, spine gilt with raised bands and green title-label lettered in gold, 456 pp.
Maps are in very good to near fine condition, with the occasional damp stain or faint stain, primarily confined to blank margins. Spine and covers are worn with bumped corners. Front and back pastedown have red wax spots, and an original owner's signature is on front free-endpaper with the date 1844. There is a bit of light damp staining in the blank margins in some portions of text, and the bottom margin of p. 437 is missing.
