This French atlas by Edme Mentelle was intended for the students of the royal special military school. The atlas consists of seventeen double-page maps out of eighteen, missing only the world map. There are 8 maps focused on Europe, 5 maps of the ancient world and 1 each of the Americas, Africa and Asia. The maps are engraved by Tardieu. Published by J.B. Delaval, Rue Geoffroy Langevin, No. 7, Paris. Hardbound, quarter-calf over green marbled paper-covered boards with gilt title on spine.
Original outline color with the map of France in full hand color. Overall, the pages are lightly toned with some maps showing some offsetting, scattered foxing and a few creases. There are occasional notations in the blank margins but not in the image. There is some small paper loss near the centerfold of the Netherlands, Italy, France and Africa maps and the title page bottom left corner has been replaced with old paper. Library stamp on title page and map of Ancient Greece. Covers show some wear and the edges are bumped.
