This finely engraved map of southern Africa extends from the Horn of Africa and the Bight of Benin in the north, to the Cape of Good Hope in the south, and includes Madagascar. Gastaldi was one of the foremost Italian cartographers of the 16th century, and based this map on discoveries by the Portuguese of southern Africa and by the Arabs of the east coast of Africa. The interior of Africa is filled with mountains, rivers and lakes, with a few cities named, and the sea is stippled with undulating waves. Italian text on verso.
