Dr. Playfair (1738-1819), was a minister, historiographer to the Prince of Wales, and Principal of the United College of St Salvator and St Leonard in the University of St Andrews from 1799 until his death. The maps from Playfair's A New General Atlas are quite scarce. This detailed map of South America depicts a large Patagonia in the southern tip, and a large Vireinato de la Plata encompassing all of Chile, Argentina, Uruguay, Bolivia and Paraguay. Brazil is divided into states. Engraved by Samuel John Neele and published by Macredie, Skelly & Co.
