This atlas contains two title pages, frontispiece, dedication, preface, table of contents, and 40 of the 43 fold-out maps and tables. Nineteen of the maps are on two joined sheets. In addition to numerous maps, the atlas is filled with genealogical charts, coats of arms, views of castles, history of mythology, a chart on fortifications, and other historical information.

The frontispiece, by B. Picart, shows classical muses representing: Geography, using measuring dividers on a map; Navigation with a crown of ships' bows and holding an oar; Chronology ,holding a genealogical chart; and winged History writing the Atlas Historique. The muses surround Atlas who supports the large globe at center. Above them it appears that Father Time is carrying a woman to heaven where a pantheon of ancient gods awaits in the clouds.

The atlas is missing three fold-out maps: #40 with military medallions, #42 with ships and navigational instruments, and #43 with flags. Small Elephant Folio, full leather, with raised bands and gilt on spine. 108 pp.

Condition: A

Most of the maps and tables are in near fine condition, with light toning and occasional short fold separations. A few maps are in very good condition, with the following explanations: maps #7 and #24 have 4" fold separations; map #17 has a clean tear at bottom that enters 1" into the map image. The covers are worn and rubbed, and the spine is beginning to detach. Overall a nice example.
