Ortelius based this fine map of the Persian Empire in part on Gastaldi's 1564 map of Asia Minor and on his own 1567 map of Asia. The map is filled with village and city names. The Indus River is on the right. The Caspian Sea has the typical east-west orientation of the period. Decorative elements include large strapwork title cartouche and a distance scale surmounted by a strange bestiary creature. Spanish text on verso marked page 95. Although Christopher Plantin printed several issues of the atlas, the 1588 Spanish edition was the first he published, paying Ortelius royalties for the rights. Only 300 copies of this 1588 Spanish edition were printed.
