"Europam sive Celticam Veterem. Sic Describere Conabar Abrahamus Ortelius", Jansson, Jan
Period: 1640 (circa)
Color: Hand Color
18.8 x 14 inches
47.8 x 35.6 cm
This is an uncommon variant of the map Jansson issued in his historical atlas. It is based on Ortelius' map of the same title, and credits him in the title cartouche. It covers Celtic Europe and is fully engraved with forests, mountains and rivers, and there are several ancient tribal and place names. The map bears the same engraver's imprint of Everard Symonsz Hamersveldt and the cartographic content remains unchanged, but the cartouches have been simplified.
Old color with light toning along centerfold and a few faint spots. Short centerfold separations at top and bottom have been closed on verso with archival tape, and a short tear adjacent to bottom centerfold has been closed on verso with old paper.
