These later chromolithograph plates are from one of the most important early works on Native Americans. Catlin was an American artist and traveler who devoted himself to using his art to illustrate the customs of the American Indian. He painted over 600 pictures and the people and their cultural life from 48 different tribes. The work was first published in 1841 and reissued several times, including this edition of chromolithographs. Each image has a number for its title. The lot contains portraits of important chief and warriors, wild horses, Indians in boats on the Missouri River, and more.
