This uncommon map of the northern half of the continent focuses on the course of the Amazon River. Typical of Coronelli's strong engraving style, the topographical features are very prominent. But most interesting are the many small illustrations of Native American life including several depictions of warfare, execution and cannibalism. Dispersed throughout the map are also several indigenous animals, including the incorrectly depicted elephants and lions. The distance scale is encircled in a ribbon that is being tied by a playful sea creature and the title is contained in a garland cartouche with the coat of arms of Giovanni da Verrazzano, to which the map is dedicated.
