This is a decorative double hemisphere world map from a Dutch Bible. It is based on Visscher's Bible map of 1663 and surrounded by nearly identical engravings, including numerous exotic animals and four female allegorical representations of the continents. At the top and bottom are two diagrams depicting the Copernican and Ptolemaic theories of the solar system. California is depicted as an island with a flat northern coast. Australia is presented with the western and northern coasts and the discoveries of Van Diemen. There are numerous Pacific islands as well as much of the western coastline of New Zealand. Dutch text on verso, published by Pieter en Jacob Keur.

References: Shirley #498; Poortman & Augusteijn #130 (GII-3).

The lower half of the centerfold has been professionally repaired, along with a 3" tear that extended into the Western Hemisphere from the map center, and a few paper edge tears. All repairs were expertly done and are only seen now on close inspection.
