The New Universal Atlas was one of the most important and popular American atlas of the 19th century. It was published during a period (1836-1859) of rapid growth in the United States and equally rapid technological advancements in printing technology. The popular atlas went through numerous (nearly annual) editions, by a succession of important publishers including Henry Tanner, Samuel Mitchell, Thomas, Cowperthwait & Co, and Charles DeSilver. The maps were constantly revised and updated and were produced by the most technologically advanced methods; evolving from copper engraving to lithographic transfer. The maps in this lot are from an edition published by Thomas, Cowperthwait & Co., which published the atlas between 1850 and 1854. These editions included the distinctive scroll borders colored with the new chromolithographic method. The color within the maps was still applied by hand distinguishing the political divisions, canals and railroads.
