This colorful geological map focuses on the United States, but also includes a good portion of Canada and the Baja. It identifies twelve different geological structures by color. This updated German edition by Justus Perthes presents much of the same information as Marcou's original 1853 map but extends geological coverage to the Pacific and eliminates the geological profile across the top. The Copper trap previously shown in the Wind River Mountains is not depicted here.
The map is with the original report "Uber die Geologie der Vereinigten Staaten und der Englishchen Provinzen von Nord-Amerika..." German text, octavo, 12 pp. In Marcou 48 the author proudly, if not immodestly, boasts "It is the first geological map comprising the whole country from the Atlantic to the Pacific Oceans, the author being the first geologist to cross the continent with a Government expedition - the Pacific Railroad exploration." An uncommon edition of Marcou's scarce map.
