These two early views depict the settlements of Rio de Janeiro and Sao Paulo. They illustrate the earliest Dutch attempts to break the Portuguese hold on Brazil and establish lucrative trading colonies in the region. The first shows the four ship fleet of Admiral Oliver Van Noort in the harbor at Rio de Janeiro in 1598. The second illustration shows Joris van Spillbergen's attack on St. Vincent (present-day Sao Paulo) in 1614. Both are on full sheets of German text with text on verso.
