French lithographer Isidore Deroy captured this bustling view of the harbor and city of Havana in one of a series of views of the major American ports published by L. Turgis. Turgis, active in both Paris and New York, is best known for this very rare series of lithographed American seaports, although he also published a similar series of the major cities in Europe. Gloria Gilda Deák, in her 1988 book, Picturing America, noted several in this series but was unable to confirm if a complete set existed. This view of Havana has only been listed in two dealer's catalogs in the past 25 years.
