This elaborate, decorative map of the island is filled with information concerning the mountains, forests, cities and ports. Columbus first visited Hispaniola in 1492 and it is there that his flagship, the Santa Maria, ran aground somewhere on the north coast of present-day Haiti. The map is adorned by a title cartouche with two natives and a scene of the explorers erecting a cross in the background. This is the much more decorative, and uncommon, second state with the map enclosed in a superb picture frame-style border with incredible 3-dimensional quality. It was published in the rare La Galerie Agrable du Monde, of which only 100 copies were printed.
