Exquisite portrait of two of the most important mapmakers during the Dutch dominance of cartography. Gerard Mercator is shown with his successor, Jodocus Hondius, seated at a table surrounded by the implements of their trade. The fine portrait is set within an elaborate strapwork frame that encompasses a map of Europe. The scene was engraved by Coletta Hondius, in tribute to her late husband, and appeared in the Atlas from 1613 onwards. Latin text on verso.
Good impression and fine later color with slight bleed through on verso. Some tears in the blank margins have been professionally repaired.
