This very desirable 8" desk globe is constructed from 12 lithograph gores, and has all place names in French. The globe is undated, but geography dates it to circa 1910. The Philippines and the Sandwich Islands are indicated as possessions of the United States. In Africa, Cape Colony, Transvaal, Orange and Natal are consolidated into the Union of South Africa. Major ocean currents are shown, and a pair of legends identify principal cities, capitals, physical features, and the possessions of the United States and the European powers. The globe is mounted offset and has a brass half meridian with a decorative finial and turning knob. A 5" turned ebony wooden stem is attached to a 6" diameter ebonized wooden base. Total height is 16.5".
