This is a nice example of an early 20th century French terrestrial desk globe that rotates on an offset metal central axis and terminates on a brass turning knob mounted on an ornamental brass finial. The finial is attached to a 6.5" turned and ebonized wooden pillar that is attached to a 6"diameter ebonized wooden base. The overall height is 17". Twelve colorful lithograph paper gores show all place names in French. This globe is undated, but political geography dates it to around the turn of the twentieth century. Both the Philippines and Hawaii (also labeled Sandwich Islands) are shown as U.S. possessions, following the Spanish American War of 1898. In Africa, Cape Colony, Transval, Orange and Natal are shown; regions that were consolidated into the Union of South Africa in 1910.
